Language and Literature at St. Mary’s School

Language and Literature

we believe that language is the key to unlocking imagination, creativity, and critical thinking. Our Language and Literature program is designed to foster a love for reading, writing, and self-expression in both the Primary and Middle Sections.

Primary Section: Laying the Foundation

In the Primary Section, students are introduced to the world of stories, poems, and plays. Through engaging activities like storytelling, role-playing, and guided reading, children develop their vocabulary, comprehension, and writing skills. The emphasis is on nurturing a strong connection between spoken and written language, helping students gain confidence in expressing themselves both verbally and in writing.

Middle Section: Expanding Horizons

As students transition to the Middle Section, they are exposed to more complex texts and a deeper exploration of literary genres. Our curriculum includes prose, poetry, drama, and non-fiction, encouraging analytical thinking and enhancing literary appreciation. Through tasks like essays, creative writing, and research papers, students refine their ability to express ideas clearly and persuasively. We also foster collaboration through group discussions, debates, and presentations.

Creative Expression and Critical Thinking

In both sections, the curriculum is designed to spark creativity and critical thinking. Through creative writing, literary analysis, and group activities, students are encouraged to think deeply about the texts they encounter and express their unique perspectives. This approach helps them develop not just their academic skills, but also their ability to think independently and communicate effectively.

Building Language Skills

From grammar and vocabulary to comprehension and writing, our language program builds a strong foundation for academic success. We focus on ensuring that students master the fundamentals of language, while also learning to appreciate the beauty of literature and the power of words.

Fostering a Lifelong Love for Literature

We strive to inspire students to become lifelong readers and writers. Our Literature program encourages exploration of diverse genres, authors, and themes, helping students appreciate the richness of literature from different cultures and perspectives. By fostering a love for reading, we aim to develop students who are curious, thoughtful, and passionate about learning.

Through our Language and Literature program, St. Mary’s School ensures that students not only excel academically but also become thoughtful, expressive individuals who can use language to shape the world around them.
